Coconut Grove: A State of Mind

STOP Grove Gridlock Campaign

PETITION
STOP GROVE GRIDLOCK!
To:
Historic & Environmental Preservation Board (HEPB), Planning, Zoning & Appeals Board (PZAB) and City of Miami Officials

COCONUT GROVE NEEDS YOU: BE A B.I.G. VOICE advocating for the climate resilience of our coastal community and protect the Historic Preservation Overlay District of the Villa Woodbine site.

Join B.I.G., VOTE NO! DENY approval of Carrollton’s proposed elementary school for 336 boys and 50 faculty at VILLA WOODBINE located at 2167 South Bayshore Drive. The site is located less than 150 yards from Ransom Everglades Middle School and directly across the street from KENNEDY PARK.

STOP Grove Gridlock! This an unnecessary development, since there are 17 schools located in Coconut Grove serving over 6700 students when the Grove has approximately an area that is 5 square miles and 21,000 residents.

The impact to the City of Miami’s neighborhoods is even greater traffic bottlenecks that will impose an immense burden on our quality of life, with gridlock causing increased pollution and toxic traffic fumes, and the loss of our most personal measurable resource, our time and money. Especially for the residents of Coconut Grove – where school traffic congestion is already crippling.

Removing EIGHTY PERCENT (80%) of its existing 220 trees stated in Carrollton’s survey and arborist report will destroy Villa Woodbine’s mature and lush tree canopy, green space and the site’s protected historic and natural resources. The footprint SF of new construction will be 8 times larger than the Villa, and will add over 104,000 SF of non-pervious surface. These factors pose a grave hazard to the resilience of an already delicate coastal corridor area and will likely create flooding of surrounding properties.

Approving a new school at the historic Villa Woodbine property at 2167 S Bayshore Drive poses risks to the City of Miami that we cannot afford!

We have way too much traffic already. We sometimes cannot exit our street onto 17th ave. Also, Tigertail is blocked by parents waiting to pick up - imagine Bayshore will become more of a gridlock as well.

Are we not a historical town that needs to preserve it’s unique lush tropical setting? When are we going to say enough? Always more buildings but never new modes of moving the already congested roads. Please bring a halt to this endless construction. We need to provide more modes of transportation to lessen the traffic. Not more buildings to increase the congestion. Protect the historical greenness of the Grove.

This school will inconvenience pretty much everybody in addition to destroying a beautiful and needed green space. Furthermore, it is not necessary to have another school in Coconut Grove and Carrolton, a Catholic institution, should temper its ambitions.

Yes my name is Nancy bold and I’m very concerned about the impact and the safety of passing by access to this property and the egress on to an already overcrowded almost blocked Bayshore Dr to get back with Mercy Hospital to get anywhere at certain times of the day is impossible already so to add to that to me is a major impact on not on the environment and the hole in the entire area from experience that’s how I find safety is my primary concern along with the preservation & environmental impact which is very important - all you have to do is look around what is happening now. thank you

We don’t have the roads to accommodate this school. We do not need more traffic and more schools in Coconut Grove. Listen to your constituents. No one who lives in the Grove wants the school built. Do not approve it. This will benefit one entity while disturbing the peace of the whole community and its residents. It is the wrong thing to do.

The Grove cannot handle another school. South Bayshore Drive cannot handle more traffic. Who would even consider doing this to our community? There are tons of other larger spaces in Miami to build schools. We pay high taxes to enjoy the nature, parks and lushness the Grove provides, it's why people move here. There are enough schools, enough traffic, enough development. Enough is enough.
