Coconut Grove: A State of Mind

STOP Grove Gridlock Campaign

PETITION
STOP GROVE GRIDLOCK!
To:
Historic & Environmental Preservation Board (HEPB), Planning, Zoning & Appeals Board (PZAB) and City of Miami Officials

COCONUT GROVE NEEDS YOU: BE A B.I.G. VOICE advocating for the climate resilience of our coastal community and protect the Historic Preservation Overlay District of the Villa Woodbine site.

Join B.I.G., VOTE NO! DENY approval of Carrollton’s proposed elementary school for 336 boys and 50 faculty at VILLA WOODBINE located at 2167 South Bayshore Drive. The site is located less than 150 yards from Ransom Everglades Middle School and directly across the street from KENNEDY PARK.

STOP Grove Gridlock! This an unnecessary development, since there are 17 schools located in Coconut Grove serving over 6700 students when the Grove has approximately an area that is 5 square miles and 21,000 residents.

The impact to the City of Miami’s neighborhoods is even greater traffic bottlenecks that will impose an immense burden on our quality of life, with gridlock causing increased pollution and toxic traffic fumes, and the loss of our most personal measurable resource, our time and money. Especially for the residents of Coconut Grove – where school traffic congestion is already crippling.

Removing EIGHTY PERCENT (80%) of its existing 220 trees stated in Carrollton’s survey and arborist report will destroy Villa Woodbine’s mature and lush tree canopy, green space and the site’s protected historic and natural resources. The footprint SF of new construction will be 8 times larger than the Villa, and will add over 104,000 SF of non-pervious surface. These factors pose a grave hazard to the resilience of an already delicate coastal corridor area and will likely create flooding of surrounding properties.

Approving a new school at the historic Villa Woodbine property at 2167 S Bayshore Drive poses risks to the City of Miami that we cannot afford!

We are also fighting in my neighborhood a day care which the rear lots are two residential property's and the day care is requesting end exception. Over a 100 cars per day right off Coral Way and SW 13 Avenue and SW 21 Terrace. We need to stop these schools which are private invading our neighborhoods and affecting our quality of life!
Gretchen deresz 21.02.2020 at 03:18
My vet, dry cleaner and gym are in the grove and it is already difficult to get to them
Enough traffic
Stop gridlock
J Pine 20.02.2020 at 21:55
What about busing the children from a near by parking lot used as a drop off parking lot. Which will reduce the number of cars on the road
Lourdes Tamon 01.02.2020 at 21:13
Traffic in the area is already a nightmare especially during dismissal. We definitely do not need another school in the grove.
Marcelo 30.01.2020 at 21:59
No more schools. Let's try to preserve the pristine areas near our parks. Make sure this is zoned for residential use only. No more condo high rises.
Stanley Lynch 27.01.2020 at 19:43
It would be truly a tragedy to permit the disruption of our beautiful neighborhood through the destruction of this precious historic site. This would be inconsistent with the culture and values of the Coconut Grove community.
Rox 27.01.2020 at 19:27
Building another school which such negative impact over The Groves is simply unacceptable. Destroying nature, history, quality of life and the beauty of our neighborhood is never going to do any good over this unique village. Please, stop this project
Joao Bosco Ferreira 27.01.2020 at 19:21
I leave two miles from the location and love to use coconut grove and it’s parks and biking on the beautiful quiet Streets. I don’t want that the area becomes a new Little Havana.
Jeannie Negret 27.01.2020 at 09:10
Please stop this unnecessary construction. There is a lot of traffic already. It’s going to be more dangerous as it is for bikers and pedestrians. It will bring road rage and stress. This is not a good location for a school. Villa Woodbine is a beautiful, historical and famous landmark. It should be preserved. Cutting down the magnificent trees would be a horrible tragedy. Please go not go through with this.
Lori Land 26.01.2020 at 22:30
It’s appalling that our city officials would even entertain this. It is absolutely unnecessary, unwelcomed, and damaging to our community.
Margarita Hirooka 25.01.2020 at 19:46
Who is planning this City without taking into account the already existing street gridlock density & traffic patterns? Save historic Villa Woodbine & please find another location for this school.
VICTOR 25.01.2020 at 04:37
I have family and friends living in coconut grove and I spend significant amount of time there every year. I feel like adding this significant number of students attending a new school in the area is going to be detrimental to the of the well being and to the quality of life of residents of the community that found coconut grove as the place to live and raise their family in peace and harmony. Residential neighborhood have to be preserved as such, let’s not further pollute the air of communities that fight for having clean air and want to stay away from traffic, noise, air contamination, etc... Let’s go green!
Silvy Scherr 25.01.2020 at 00:41
we are already overwhelmed with the heavy traffic in the Grove... most of the time the traffic is at standstill because of the school ...enough is enough .
Michelle Niemeyer 24.01.2020 at 17:06
As a former Grove resident and 8-year member of the Coconut Grove Village Council, I saw a lot of complaints about the traffic congestion caused by the Ransom Everglades middle school campus on Tigertail as well as the numerous other schools in the Grove and their pickup lines. I saw, for good reason, a lot of concern about the aesthetic, environmental and economic impact of losing tree canopy and historic structures in the Grove, and I saw a lot of flooding impact, especially in the area of Villa Woodbine, on and around South Bayshore due to overdevelopment and sea level rise. The last thing the Grove needs is another private school in a residential neighborhood. I like the idea being floated about the property being purchased by the City, but if that doesn't happen I would recommend reverting the property to the residential use that surrounds it and refusing to allow sale to any commercial enterprise.
michelle daalmeijer 24.01.2020 at 16:04
We are against building a school at this location!!!
They need to find another location that’s more accessible for cars and accumulate less traffic for the north Grove.
David Pujol 24.01.2020 at 14:34
LEAVE THE GROVE ALONE! Enough damage has been done and we have plenty of unused retail/office space a it is.

Get there’s greedy assholes away from the best part of miami
Adele S. Tallman 23.01.2020 at 19:06
This School will not enhance the City of Miami. It does nothing for the Coastal Community. It is not GREEN.
Willie Gonzalez 22.01.2020 at 19:08
I believe we don’t need another business in the area of Coconut Grove that will further increase the already terrible vehicular traffic, compounded by the runners and bicycles... Willie
pamela ibarguen 22.01.2020 at 13:13
Our traffic pattern, as is, is almost stop and go on any given day. We cannot tolerate another entity on S Bayshore Dr to further cause gridlock.
Jacqueline Povea 22.01.2020 at 11:34
I believe in a greeer and healthier city. I dont approve building a school that will destroy natural resources on the heart of the city.
Maxim Venjik 20.01.2020 at 15:56
The last thing the Grove needs is more traffic. Especially at the expense of natural habitats for animals and vegetation.
Josue Acosta 20.01.2020 at 02:23
I do not support Grove Gridlock. It only harm the historic value of one of the most beautiful areas Miami has.
Elvis Cruz 19.01.2020 at 17:43
Traffic congestion is already a major issue in Coconut Grove.

The planned removal of over 110 trees from this property is also an adverse impact on the area.
Juan Carlos Escotet 19.01.2020 at 15:19
Enough please. Traffic is horrible and it is only affecting the Coconut Grove Residents. We already have more than enough good schools in the area #StopGroveGridlock
Francesca Cruz 19.01.2020 at 14:18
Stop Grove Gridlock!! Please do NOT let this school move into this beautiful villa. It will impact this neighborhood it a terrible way. Thank you!
Elizabeth Adir 18.01.2020 at 00:42
Please stop the proposed construction of the schools that will cause even greater gridlocks than we have now
Teresa Menendez 17.01.2020 at 19:05
Traffic on South Bayshore Drive is bad enough as it is today. This main road can not afford to have more daily volume of vehicles transiting otherwise will become a complete gridlock with major consequences.
Leslie Van de Velde 17.01.2020 at 15:47
Driving in Miami is extremely dangerous. We need traffic planners. Less traffic through the Grove would be a significant way to improve. There is much pedestrian traffic. The traffic of parents and nannies coming and going from out of town to pick up their kids has made driving and walking significantly more dangerous and added to the pollution. Rushing parents and nannies, horn blowing, no signals, oversize vehicles. P{ut the schools in less densely populated areas!
Vania Mendes 17.01.2020 at 15:44
We do not need a new school that will bring more traffic to Bayshore or Coconut Grove!
We don’t want trees to be removed or destroyed, we don’t want destroy this beautiful area.
Diana M Davies 17.01.2020 at 15:07
I have too many comments that would take a lot of writing. All I can say is that we have lived in the Grove all our lives (1972) and it is sad how the face of such a beautiful neighborhood is being eroded by "progress". Too many greedy politicians have a hand in the cookie jar, handing out permits for the horrible macmansions and the monstrosity of the new Cocowalk Center. Now they also want to tear down a historical structure that is supposedly protected, not to mention the beautiful tree canopy and the traffic nightmare that another school will bring. Mayor Suarez you grew up in the Grove, show us you still care!
Elena Jakubowicz 17.01.2020 at 12:56
There is plenty of activity in bay shore drive, gridlock. I am sure there are other places where Carlton school can be located without causing traffic jams.
Robert Powers 16.01.2020 at 20:56
I wonder how many people who send their children to that school actually live in the city of Miami. It always seems the city of Miami gets the short end of the stick not it's politicians mind you. But the people who actually live here and pay the taxes. The thing that I never understood is we only get one vote. And we keep on pandering to people who want to build and make things bigger in our neighborhood in our city that don't even live here. We don't receive any tax revenue from them, nothing not that that justifies what they want to do. It just always seems that the citizens of the city of Miami are always at the s*** end of the stick when it comes to us having to put up with other people's great ideas.
Olga Andreu 16.01.2020 at 02:06
Stop clogging the area with traffic it was not designed to handle. Stop destroying the charm of the Grove.
Christine Rabi 16.01.2020 at 01:38
No more canopy destruction; keep the Grove beautiful! If it loses any more canopy it ceases to be the lush haven for which Coconut Grove is known. More schools and traffic are tremendously unwanted and unnecessary.
sean knoll 13.01.2020 at 02:10
we have too much traffic now. stop the building of that school now. they can set up the school in a less congested area thank you all.
Claudia crippa 11.01.2020 at 20:04
Nature is very important to us save our planet., I don’t agree getting rid of our tres and nature in coconut grove.
Jenny Gomez 11.01.2020 at 17:34
Stop the corruption! We do not need anymore schools! Preserve the environment! Stop Grove Gridlock!!!
KEVIN ALMASSIAN 10.01.2020 at 04:28
I REALLY HOPE THIS CONSTRUCTION CAN BE STOPPED. WHY CAN'T THEY INTEGRATE BOYS INTO THEIR PRIVATE GIRLS SCHOOL ANYWAYS?
Mary T. MacDonald 07.01.2020 at 15:48
I have too many comments to write! DO NOT continue to ruin South Bayshore Drive, the Waterfront and the Community that put Miami on the map. This development and the impact of traffic and the coastline's landscape! Please save the natural resources that will protect the community. The Grove requires help - now - just for the flooding of South Bayshore - HELP do not HURT . . .
ANDREW U SMOAK 05.01.2020 at 16:49
We have enough traffic from Ransom Middle School!!! Historic VIlla Woodbine has to be protected- that is why the property site was designated with a historic verlay district over 30 years ago !!! And the tree canopy absolutely must be protected- and it mitigates all the traffic noise & pollution . The Grove has made many bad solutions- and all the closed off roads have pushed the traffic onto tigertail & South Bayshore. This new school will make traffic even more of a nightmare. Commissioners do your job- voting to save Villa Woodbine as a historic district is a vote for all City of Miami residents!
Marianne Devine 02.01.2020 at 17:09
Enough is enough. Stop this proposed, intensive change to our residential community. This is just be the beginning. First, another elementary school. In a few years, Carrollton will be coming back to build a boys' high school in our neighborhood. If Carrollton wants a boys school Carrollton should modify its existing campuses or move to an area with the appropriate land use and zoning.
Carol Ewing 31.12.2019 at 15:45
Totally disruptive to the neighborhood! We need to preserve the beauty and charm of coconut Grove AND our waterfront.
Jacqueline coca 31.12.2019 at 11:27
Coconut Grove already has enough schools. There is no need for an additional school. Allowing this to happen is proof of corruption. The people of coconut grove are NOT in favor of this initiative.
Frank Hessel 31.12.2019 at 06:21
Traffic is terrible, as it currently is. Adding this facility will make the traffic unbearable. In addition by removing mature trees our environment only gets worst. Where do we draw the line, NOW.
Michael Seker 30.12.2019 at 11:15
We need to petition the city and or the county more development is not welcome here the infrastructure is not designed for the a.ount of density they are attempting to achieve
ruben 29.12.2019 at 21:54
Preserve and maintain the beauty of this community.

Stephane Deneux 29.12.2019 at 16:39
There is a reason I moved to Coconut Grove...stop this none sense construction. We do not need more schools
Bales Bransgrove 29.12.2019 at 16:36
Thank you for your work !
As a Miami native and Grove-ite, I cant believe the destruction that's taking place. So many places that can use renovation and fresh concrete, yet we're allowing the destruction of what makes the Grove unique. Thank you for saving our canopy, Biscayne Bay and what's left of our Grove.
James Hernandez 26.12.2019 at 21:35
Let's attempt to preserve the natural habitat when possible. Also not interested in having to deal with even more traffic congestion in that area .
