COCONUT GROVE NEEDS YOU: BE A B.I.G. VOICE advocating for the climate resilience of our coastal community and protect the Historic Preservation Overlay District of the Villa Woodbine site.
Join B.I.G., VOTE NO! DENY approval of Carrollton’s proposed elementary school for 336 boys and 50 faculty at VILLA WOODBINE located at 2167 South Bayshore Drive. The site is located less than 150 yards from Ransom Everglades Middle School and directly across the street from KENNEDY PARK.
STOP Grove Gridlock! This an unnecessary development, since there are 17 schools located in Coconut Grove serving over 6700 students when the Grove has approximately an area that is 5 square miles and 21,000 residents.
The impact to the City of Miami’s neighborhoods is even greater traffic bottlenecks that will impose an immense burden on our quality of life, with gridlock causing increased pollution and toxic traffic fumes, and the loss of our most personal measurable resource, our time and money. Especially for the residents of Coconut Grove – where school traffic congestion is already crippling.
Removing EIGHTY PERCENT (80%) of its existing 220 trees stated in Carrollton’s survey and arborist report will destroy Villa Woodbine’s mature and lush tree canopy, green space and the site’s protected historic and natural resources. The footprint SF of new construction will be 8 times larger than the Villa, and will add over 104,000 SF of non-pervious surface. These factors pose a grave hazard to the resilience of an already delicate coastal corridor area and will likely create flooding of surrounding properties.
Approving a new school at the historic Villa Woodbine property at 2167 S Bayshore Drive poses risks to the City of Miami that we cannot afford!

We do not need any more schools in Coconut Grove. They cause congestions on already crowded streets, increase taxes and the likelihood of car/pedestrian accidents. Not to mention, you are trying to destroy what makes the Grove beautiful by cutting down our beautiful trees and destroying parts of the eco-system and wildlife habitats. Furthermore, it is absurd that non-Grove Miami residents, developers and politicians are the ones pushing this project when the mass majority of actual Grove residents do NOT want this project to happen. This is the same concept as when we voted for Grove Beautification several years ago and 91% of Grove residents voted against it but the City of Miami residents voted for it, so it passed. Stop bulldozing (literally) your way into the Grove and going against the current, long-standing residents wishes. Just 'hearing' their concerns and then doing what you want to do anyway is plain wrong, greedy, and abhorrent. We do NOT need or want another Brickell or City Centre!

I object to turning this property into yet another school in the area. This will effect traffic tremendously and the plan to remove all of the specimen trees and other trees on the property is very out of order in the grove. This will cause more traffic gridlock and additional traffic congestion.

I lived at 3628 St Gaudens Road in Coconut Grove from mid 60’s to mud 70’s. All the trees were what made it so unique and pleasant to be there. Please reconsider destroying what makes the Grove so unique ❣️

It would be criminal\ to allow this zone change. South bayshore Drive is flood prone and single lane much of the way. Why make it impossible for people to get around the real by massive increase of traffic.

I strongly oppose building a school on this historic property. Our history needs to be preserved and trees protected. Bayshore Drive can be a traffic nightmare at times. We do not need any more cars on Bayshore drive.
Bayshore in Grove is a 501c3, Non-Profit organization dedicated to the advocacy of smart growth
strategies critical for climate resilience and for maintaining the unique sense of place that
encourages the Coconut Grove “State of Mind”.
